On April 24, 2019, Cottesmore of Life Care in Gig Harbor, Washington, celebrated the 101st birthday of resident Ruth Byrd.

Byrd was born in Germany and moved to Lakewood, Washington, with her husband and two children in 1957. She went to college and then taught languages to military personnel at the military school for many years. Later, she worked at the main headquarters at Fort Lewis (now Joint Base Lewis-McChord).

When Byrd was asked how she felt about being 101, she replied, “I don’t feel 101. It’s silly. It’s only a number.”

Although her son, Odo, shared that he misses his mother’s excellent cooking, Byrd has blessed Cottesmore of Life Care with her beautiful smile and wonderful attitude about life. She loves watching golf on TV and talking with the staff.

“I love the people around here – they are really courteous,” Byrd said. “I have many angels here and everything I need. It’s really true. I’m awfully happy. I love it here. It’s my home now.”
